Week 33

My wittle pumpkin!  In a pumpkin!  I cannot take credit for this idea as I saw it online.  I'm not sure who to give the credit to, but Addy is taking all the credit for pulling it off!  This was probably one of the fastest shot Monday Pictures.  She. Hated. It.  As soon as that smile turned upside down (probably about 45 seconds into the shoot), we pulled her out.  I cut the pumpkin just as you would a jack-o-lantern, by drawing my lines first.  I cut off the top, cleaned it out, and cut the leg holes.  The back is cut very low so she had room to wiggle and could make an easy exit.  Which we required.  I put a thin blanket down inside the pumpkin and you can see it peeking out of one leg hole.  She may have been young, but she knew she didn't want pumpkin sliming up her belly.

Week 32

Ahh sweet angel.  Sigh. I have nothing more to say about this one.

Except that I bought the wings at a party store and she brought her own birthday suit.  The background is a brown blanket with a lot of texture.  She is sitting on the sheet and it's bunched up under her (my attempt at a cloud).  I sat her down facing the blanket and waited for her to turn on her own.  I played with Photoshop to give her the ethereal glow that she deserved. :)

Week 31

Now that's a bushel of CuTe!  Those little toes peeking over the edge are almost too much!  The Saturday before this Monday picture was Addy's first trip to the apple orchard and, though she prefers her apples pureed, she sank her gums into several!  The weather was warm on this September afternoon and we ventured out onto the deck for her photo shoot.  The background is one curtain panel from my living room and the red cloth sticking up behind her is the blanket used to keep her from rubbing against the basket.  I bought this basket at Michael's where I have definitely earned frequent flyer miles.  Most of the basket is filled with towels  and there are only a few apples around the rim.  It was her idea to pick up the apple and, I must say, she made the shot a gazillion times more fabulous.

Week 30

This one is so quackin' cute, I can barely stand it.  No ugly ducklings around here!  I had these props for so long, I couldn't wait to use them!!!  I had to wait until she was sitting well on her own because I wanted her to be on the wood floor.  This was taken up in her room because the lighting was much better up there on this particular day.  The white sheet made it all the way to her room and draped itself over her crib (in a messy way.  aargh.).  I found the duck diaper cover on Amazon and these duckies were on clearance in a drug store.  I was using my DSLR for this camera and, while some photographers would share their settings, I was still kinda clueless so that type of information most likely won't help you anyway.  This info will help though- put the duckies down AFTER you sit the baby down!  She had no idea they were there!  Once she turned far enough around and caught a glimpse, it was all over.  Those duckies were toast.

Week 29

Meet Lucy, our furry first born.  She was the baby before Addy came along and she begrudgingly moved into the Big Sister role.  Note to the Addy fans from the past year: you are in for a surprise.  If you don't like surprises, look away.... Ready?   This picture is a total fake.  This is actually a composite of 2 pictures.  Those with a trained Photoshop eye probably already spotted it because it was my first attempt.  But I know many were fooled.  So YAY!  As much as I love my pup, she is a dog and animals are unpredictable.  Plus, Lucy had shown a bit of jealousy and I wasn't risking anything.  Sooo...  I took Lucy's picture first.  I had her sit on the sheet and bribed her with a treat to stay there.  Then I took Addy's picture in the same place.  My lovely assistant held a toy up in the left corner so Addy would look up that way.  Finally, using Photoshop, I put the 2 pictures together. Ta-Da!  Our two girls <3

Week 28

Mirror, mirror on the wall... I know who's the fairest so I won't even bother to ask! :)  Not long before this, Addy had discovered herself in the mirror and watching her watch herself left everyone in hysterics.    This was the most difficult setup thus far because I needed the background to be all black.  I created a U-shape with black sheets and the couch.  I hung one sheet from the wall and leaned the mirror up against it.  I pulled the sheet along the right side and spread it along the back of the couch, then hung another sheet on the baby swing behind her.  This created the U, and the opening was toward the window.  Hope I didn't confuse you with that description!  You can actually just do this in Photoshop but I didn't know anything about editing yet and had to go the difficult route. I set up my tripod and focused on a vase before she was in the shot so I would be ready for her immediate reaction.  I covered the mirror and sat her down in front of it.  My plan was to whip off the blanket and start snapping as soon as she saw herself, but the little monkey peeked behind the blanket.  I have a cute picture of that, too :).  I just pulled off the blanket and let her babble to the pretty girl in the mirror.  I ended up with several great shots!  If you try this one- which I totally recommend- make sure your mirror is secure.  As you can see,  her hands all over it.  You don't want the mirror to tip over onto your little one, no matter how light it is.

Week 27

Baby bum is always cute.  No matter what.  She had just started sitting up on her own so I wanted to showcase her new skill.  So not only did I have an adorable picture, I also had photo documentation of a milestone.  She was still wobbly, so I had a total of 3 blankets under her for padding and my lovely assistant (a.k.a. Addy's Daddy) was right outside the frame ready to catch her if she toppled over.  The background is the back of my couch, minus the sheet.  She was becoming more active so to keep her busy I have a toy sitting right in front of her.  That worked for about 10 seconds.  Glad I got one shot!  AND guess who got a new camera?  I finally got my hands on a DSLR for this Monday Picture.  Even at Week 49, I'm still learning how to use it.

Week 26

I'm not a fan of seafood, but this crustacean is sooo appealing!  I searched high and low for a hat like this.  My search went on for months (I swear I'm only half the dork I appear to be).  Finally, my parents' friends found it while on vacation in Maine.  Oh yes, I recruit.  She's sitting in a pot that has seen decades of baby playtimes by the lake, as well as decades of family pasta dinners.  It's a multipurpose pot!  They are on the floor behind the couch and the white sheet is tucked under for a neater look.   I know one person was disturbed by this setup (Hi, Kristin!) but I honestly had no intention of making surf and turf for dinner.

Week 25

Peace, Love, and Addy.  It's all the world needs!  This setup is quite the smorgasbord.  The daisy headband is a strip I found at the fabric store,  glued together to fit her head.  I had actually made it for her to wear as a regular headband but I overestimated the size of her noggin...but it fit this way!  The glasses came from the party store, the onesie came from a street festival months before, and the flower is from the GROCERY STORE!  HAHA!  I seriously pick up anything that could be of future use.  Not good for the budget, but great for Mondays!  If it had been between a meal and a prop, I think you know what I would have done.  Baby Flower Child is sitting on the couch, turned toward the window.  The Mommy-Photographer is doing something ridiculous to elicit this smile.  But let's keep that a secret so I can keep some dignity.

Week 24

The papasan was so happy to be needed again that it threw a luau!  Adeline looks fantastic, as always, but this was my least favorite setup.  I had great intentions and it just didn't come together as I had hoped.  Can't love everything, right?  Her skirt and the parrot poster came from Michael's and I made the headband.  I still kick myself when I walk through stores and see better luau goodies... like I should have done it over, switched the pictures, and hoped no one noticed that she suddenly looked months older on Week 24.  Growth spurt?  However, I love how the light caught her eyes this week.  Beautiful baby blues!

Week 23

Anyone up for a quick round? Any sport that requires a cute outfit works for us!  Can you guess where this expensive golf set came from?  Thank you, Target dollar bins!  The visor is from Michael's and it worked well because it had the stretchy cord in the back to fit teeny heads.  She's sitting in a Boppy because she couldn't sit up on her own yet, and the white sheet is hanging off the back of the couch.  My living room transformed on Mondays!  Did I mention I was taking down the curtains to let in all possible beams of sunlight?  Anyway, I've heard that golf scholarships are the way to go, so this set may be out and about again as soon as she starts walking!  Watch out, (insert some famous golfer that I can't name because I don't know anything about golf)!

Week 22

Aaaaaaand she's off!  It's Miss Addy J riding INeedANewDiaperSTAT and they're taking the lead!  The local race track was opening for biz this week and we were getting in the spirit.  I found that hat months before in a party store and the horse head is a child's visor I found at Michael's.  I taped the visor to the head a golf club and wrapped the rest of  it in a brown pillowcase (my husband is telling me the technical terms for these parts of the golf club, but I think my descriptions are accurate enough for non-golfers like myself).  This jockey and INeedANewDiaperSTAT are on the ottoman and the white sheet is hanging over the back of the papasan.  I just LOVE her face in this one.  I want to squish my face into those chubby cheeks!  Who's with me??

Week 21

She's not just a princess, she's a princess with distinguished taste.  This frog prince just won't do.  Remove it from her presence at once!  Maybe she knows he wasn't sent by her Fairy Godmother and was instead purchased at HomeGoods to live on the deck.  She received the tutu as a gift so I can't tell you where it's from.  The tiara came from Target, and the white sheet is from my linen closet.
This is the picture that spurred the "She is going to hate you when she's older" talk.  Is it because of the adorable belly rolls?  All I know is that my belly is similar, but its way cuter on her.

Week 20

In hindsight, playing Snoop Dogg every night as her lullaby probably wasn't a good idea.  The whole nursery took it far too seriously.  To fit her whole crew in the Monday Picture,  I took apart my living room and turned the couch toward the window.  Keeping the sunglasses on her peeps was quite a challenge because of Lil' Missy's hip hop dance moves between shots.  At least half of the pictures had someone's glasses askew, so this is as good as it got!  If I had known anything about Photoshop-or even OWNED Photoshop- at this point, I could have edited that.  Good thing her pout was was so perfectly executed that the details are hardly noticed!  Proves the point- as long as the star shines, the rest is irrelevant.

Week 19

Baby, you're a FiReWoRk!!!!  She sparkled brighter than any other on her First Fourth of July!  The headband was from the same Target dollar bin that her Memorial Day ensemble came from.  Have to think ahead!  This is the flag that hangs in front of our house and its spread over her Boppy pillow.  She is sporting a Carter's bathing suit, and her Momma's button nose.  She is facing the window but you can clearly tell that I make a better door than window and am blocking direct light to her face.  Proud to be an American, and Addy's Mommy!

Week 18

Yay for my little Extreme Couponer!  This show had just debuted and I was in awe.  I cut coupons for 3 weeks to save up for this Monday Picture.  Really, though, this is representative of all the times I have actually tried to be couponer, clipped tons, and left them at home.  Too bad it's not the thought that counts.  Miss Addy is sporting a homemade, Sharpie-embroidered onesie and a handcrafted coupon bow.  And she is clearly thrilled at the prospect of saving money!  While I was clipping coupons for this shot, I was not discriminatory.  I knew I needed a lot, so I clipped away as I was watching tv.  When it came time to set up the shot, I spread them out haphazardly.  She wiggled a lot so the coupons wiggled with her.  I loaded them onto my computer, chose my favorite shot and was about to upload it when I looked a little closer.  There it was... a giant coupon for Super Plus Tampons by her head.  Needless to say, I chose my second favorite shot.

Week 17

First Father's Day!  I have a black sheet taped to the wall with about 40 pieces of tape.  Actually, now that I think about it, I think it's a shower curtain!  Whatever works, people!  This Daddy's Girl was stone faced for the first 25 shots, so her Daddy had to whip out every funny bit he had in his 17-week-old-Daddy arsenal.  I think she knew that her headband and outfit were completely mismatched and she wasn't dealing well with it.  If Daddy had turned around you probably would have noticed how much these two look alike...

Week 16

Chef Boy-ar-Addy!  Good thing she can cook because we all know I can't.  For location and backdrop, see belowww.  It will be the same for several more weeks, in fact.  I found this hat at a local party store.  It is made for an adult, so I pulled it back and clipped it to a size suitable for the peanut girl.  She insisted on the flower and I couldn't argue.  She was right, the hat was a tad drab.  Once I loaded the pictures onto my computer I realized I should have used a different color backdrop (a.k.a bed sheet) because her hat blended in.  I also realized I should have moved the salt shaker over just bit more in order to balance her sweetness.

Week 15

Oh she may look 100% sweet, but clearly there's at least 15% sass.  She put this outfit together herself.  The headbands are from Kohl's, the boa is from Target (sadly, not the dollar bins), and the diaper cover is part of an outfit.  Same papasan, same wrinkly ol' sheet, same half-turn that creates a shadowed right side.  But who cares about shadows when you are wearing an ensemble such as this?  I have about 80 shots from this week because I couldn't get the little bugger to look at me.  I settled for this one and consider it a candid of a pouty diva.

Week 14

Happy Memorial Day!  And Happy First Smiley Monday Picture!  But most importantly, the papasan is making a dramatic, patriotic return! :)  I found the headband and the flags in the Target dollar bins, my favorite place to shop.    Not that I stop there, of course.  THAT should be a Survivor challenge, now that I think about it.  Go into Target, shop at the dollar bin, and leave.  Impossible.  But I digress.  Like most people, I had Memorial Day off so I was able to make use of the morning light.  Looking at this now, I should have turned the chair more toward the window to avoid the right side shadows.  Funny, this is still a mistake that I make!  I also wish I had noticed the pointy tops of the flags before I bought them because they terrified me.  I took the picture prepared to pounce if she picked it up.  (Say that 5x fast.)  Go, USA!

Week 13

Shh...my little pixie is sleeping!  Introducing the oversized ottoman, the lamp, and the baby's swing.  They are the new high tech equipment used to hold the fancy white sheet.  And a whole lot of tape (I'm sure if you scoured my living room, you'd find at least 3 pieces of abandoned tape).  It was a cloudy Monday and the sun was already setting so my light was limited.  I took no less than 75 shots to figure out which angle I liked and broke into a sweat thinking this was going to be a Monday failure.  She kept waking up so every minute that I spent soothing her back to sleep was another lost minute of light.  Anyone who has ever seen the artificial lighting in my living room knows that the moment the sun sets, it transforms into a cave.  To make things worse, I had started with a thick, fuzzy blanket as the backdrop.  But as the light waned, the blanket cast an odd glow on the baby.  I was determined to avoid using my flash, so I did a quick switcheroo to old faithful and the sheet reflected the last of the sunlight.
Looking back on this photo, there is so much I would change.  But I captured a peaceful moment and that's the most important thing.  I've learned that not all shots are going to have the right angle or great lighting.  It's the captured feeling that counts.

Week 12

12 Mondays into her life was a sad day for me... the end of my maternity leave :(.  It was also the day my mom, a.k.a. Grammy, took over my job of rocking the baby while watching Nate Berkus.   Addy was so angry with me for going back to work that she packed up her belongings and said she was moving to Grammy's.  And that bratty little doll of hers was in on it, too, even after I featured her in the Week 10 photo.
I threw the white sheet over the back of the papasan and faced her toward the window again.  This was taken later in the day, though, so the lighting isn't great.  I have a blanket behind her, then another folded up to support her head and neck.

Week 11

Blossoming like a peony!  And certainly better than that particular peony, which had spent its life in a vase in the guest room until I chopped it for the picture.  But what a way to go, atop this lovely lady's wiiiittle head!  This is an average flower pot but I did a lot to make it safe and comfortable for her.  To avoid tipping, there is a strategically placed stack of books and... ahem... a bulky printer.  I was being resourceful!  The bottom of the pot is stuffed with a blanket and, as you can see, there is a blanket behind her to lean on and support her head.  I carefully placed her in it and had her legs tucked in a cozy position.  The pot is on the floor and the sheet is hanging from the back of the papasan, facing the windows.  Again, I didn't know a thing about editing yet so the blanket and sheet wrinkles are totally visible.  I could have at least started ironing the sheet, but I only thought about it on Mondays!  Then I rolled it back up and put it away... which would explain the horrendous state of affairs.  Just focus on the cute:)

Week 10

On her 10th Monday, I figured she was old enough for a day out with the girls.  She had certainly earned it, after the endless nights of watching Roseanne reruns and recorded episodes of Sister Wives with me.  Trying to keep with the natural lighting, I dragged her rocking chair down the stairs.  With the papasan chair sulking in the corner, I hung the white sheet on the wall with a tape.  And speaking of massive wrinkles... yikers.  I wanted her to match her new girlfriends so I scrounged around for something pink (HA!) and took a diaper cover from another outfit.   She obviously could not sit up on her own or hold her head up, so I positioned a baby blanket behind her back and head.  I also needed to have her leaning back to avoid a dangerous face plant.  This way she was comfortable enough to stay there while I fumbled with my camera and pretended to know what I was doing- in between fits of giggles at the image I had created!  Voila!  A gang of girlies!

P.S.  This might be a good time to say that I never, ever, ever put her at risk for these pictures. I always made her very comfortable in whatever scenario I created.  It seems silly to have to say this, but I DID hear a few comments over the past year fearing either discomfort or danger.  AH!  Never, people!  I may have been obsessed with photographing her, but I was more obsessed with HER.  I wouldn't risk even a scratch doing it. :)

Week 9

You may as well quit now, she is THE guitar hero.  I saw this outfit as I was cruising through the mall one day (JCPenney, I think) and I thought about it for days.  I had to have it.  I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but I had to get my hands on it.  So here we are.  Simple, self-explanatory, super hardcore rocker chick.  Just look at her owning that guitar.  And to top it off, she was a natural when it came to all-night partying.

Week 8

Baby's first Easter!  And after this shot, she wouldn't talk to me for about an hour.  Turns out, Easter grass is super annoying.  I can't believe I got one decent shot of her like this because this is the ONE millisecond that her eyes were closed and she looked peaceful.  What I love:  her little face and the bunny ears.  What I would change: the placement of the number and the visible diaper.  The off-center 8 irked me but, like I said earlier, Addy and I were not on speaking terms and couldn't take another picture.  She was Monday-ed out.

Week 7

Best. Gift. Ever.  The packaging kind of gives away what's wrapped up inside, but I'm still happy to receive it.  HEY!  Where's the papasan?  Don't worry, old faithful is there, it's just wearing a new outfit!  I threw a white bed sheet over it to change it up a bit.  Pay no attention to the massive wrinkles.  Week 7 became my first disaster shoot.  I had a whole different idea that didn't work out so I ended up grabbing this gift bag from a pile and placing my little stone-faced sweetheart inside.  Lucky for me, she looks irresistible. No gift receipt necessary!

Week 6

She made so many friends in the first 6 weeks, I had to get at least one picture of them all together.  They spent so much time together, I think they were starting to look alike.  Huh.  Anyway, do you notice the big difference?   Same bat chair, but new bat time and new bat lighting.  I scooted the papasan over to the windows and turned it into the light.  The natural lighting made such a difference in the coloring, I was hooked.  Most of the weekly pictures were taken in the same place, with the exception of the few that required a second round.. later in the day.  Oh, we'll get into those disasters.

Week 5

I took a different approach this week and it lasted... exactly one week.  My thought was to document something new she did from week to week.  But then the following week, there was nothing new.  Unless you consider the first up-the-back diaper a milestone, but who wants a picture of that?  I'm not even sure how I would have set that one up.  You can tell I was still shooting at night with the flash, which created a horrible red eye.  I certainly didn't know anything about editing so that's how I left it.  I kept it that way for this blog just to show how much her pictures changed over the next few months.   I'd like to say that my skill improvement correlated with the increase of her cuteness, but she beat me by a landslide.

Week 4

Ahh the first day of spring and the fourth Monday evening of her life.  And the appearance of photo props!  These were from my guest room.  I blew off the dust and put them on that papasan (and if you say you've had time to maintain a dust-free house with a new baby, you're lying).  I'm sure you have noticed that so far all of her pictures were taken in the evening with a flash.  Being a new mother, I spent the day staring at her, checking in with my mother about every move she made, and changing diapers.  I had to wait for my husband to come home from work to help me set up a picture.  Because the papasan is curved, I had to put her on a pillow.  I placed the daisies all around, and shot away.

Week 3

Yes, it was early March and my child was in a bathing suit.  In my defense, my mother had "shown" us how to turn up the heat in our house and insisted we abandon our typical Arctic climate.  So she was fine.  I remember sitting on the couch this third Monday of her life, thinking of what she was going to wear for the Monday picture.  A friend of the family had sent this gift over a few days before and it was still on the kitchen table. Perfect.  And it gave me yet another opportunity to dress up my living doll in something other than a onesie and feety pjs (though she, of course, looked snuggly and sweet in anything).  So here's the Princess and Her Papasan.  I can't even take credit for taking this picture.  My husband took it as I ran back and forth to reposition the pillow under her little wobbly head.  Can you imagine our surprise when we looked back at the image on the screen and saw a smile?!  When we finished with our giggle fit 10 minutes later, we realized it was probably just a gas bubble with impeccable timing.  But really... she's quite advanced.

Week 2

2 weeks old.. and a closet full of tutus.  Not to mention more shades of pink than I ever learned about in art class.  But I'm not complaining!  This girl looks good!  Admittedly, I had purchased those socks before she came.  I had picked up a box of blue argyle socks, too, but I was "secretly" hoping to be dressing a mini ballerina.  So here she is, the second Monday evening of her life, on the papasan chair.  The yawn was a common sight in our house at this point, but it's way more endearing on her teeny face.  Isn't it funny how much smaller she looked this week?  While I thought it was obviously due to the wardrobe change, other people thought she had shrunk.  Honey, I shrunk the kid.
I should have mentioned earlier that these pictures were shot with a Canon G9, a fabulous point and shoot.  We ended up with this camera after my husband accidentally dropkicked the mediocre point and shoot camera we had first.  A welcome upgrade (though I certainly wasn't as friendly at the time of the camera's untimely death).

Week 1

Addy was born on a Monday, so I decided each weekly photo must be taken on a Monday.  How scientific of me, right?  Anyway, I stuck with my plan and put her on the papasan with her number.  You will see in a few weeks time that I shrink the number and eventually eliminate the paper.  The gargantuan white glare distracted me from the chubby cheeks and had to go.  (Seriously, look at those CHEEKS!  They demand full attention!) Since we hadn't found out the sex of the baby and waited for the surprise, we had nothing that was gender specific.  Luckily I have two sisters and a mother that were certain I was having a girl and had already stocked up on girly attire.  And what girly portrait is complete without a huge pink flower?

Way back in the beginning...

As of February 2011, I was the last of my local friends to have a baby.  This meant 2 things: 1) I learned that babies piddle in the water during bath time and  2)  I could gather (err... steal) plenty of fun ideas to do with my own little bundle of joy.  One of the first ideas was documenting my baby's growth with a weekly picture (Thanks, Jen!).  While doctors and books were telling me to write a birth plan, I was busy formulating my weekly picture.  The numbers I needed, all the way up to 52, were already printed from my wedding (I was one of those wedding planning nerds that found every crafty idea and broke the bank trying to copy them.  I honestly believed that I would somehow develop an artistic streak overnight and magically learn to paint and decoupage my way into the Louvre).  My plan was to put the baby on the brown papasan chair every week with the respective number and take a picture.  It certainly started that way, but it grew into more than I had ever expected!  Adeline is now at week 48 and I'm so excited by the following of fans she has developed through her simple cuteness and natural charm (a mommy can brag if she wants)!  These photos are a great memoir of her first year and also a documentation of how I have grown as a photographer.  Through this blog I hope to share what I have done with my daughter and inspire you to give it a try!  I will start with week 1 and post as quickly as I can to catch you up!  And bear with the quality of the images.. they improved as I learned :)
